Australian cruisers HMAS Australia and Canberra were to be modernized according to the Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated 16 August 1939

An item dated Melbourne, Australia 15 August reported that the costs of the earlier approved modernization of the Australian cruiser HMAS Australia (1) were 650.000 pound sterling but her fighting value would be improved. The department of Defence stated that immediately would be started. The cruiser Canberra (2) was later also to be modernized.
