British protected cruiser HMS Challenger visited the Dutch East Indies in June 1904

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1903-1904 reported that the British cruiser HMS Challenger (1) visited Tandjong Priok, Dutch East Indies between 26-28 June 1904. The Dutch newspaper Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 30 June reported her arrival on Sunday evening 26 June at Tandjong Priok coming from Colombo, Ceylon and bound for Fremantle, Australia. Commanded by captain F.C.J. Tudor (2). The journalist wrote furthermore that she measured 2.030,65 registers, armed with 11 guns and that her crew numbered 464 men (including 22 officers). The Locomotief dated 2 July published an item dated Anjer 28 June reporting her departing Batavia destined towards Fremantle.

1. Part of Challenger-class 2nd class protected cruisers, preceded by Highflyer-class, succeeded by Topaz-class. Laid down by HM Dockyard Chatham on 1 December 1900, launched on 27 May 1902, completed in 1904 and broken up in 1920.

2. Sir Frederick Charles Tudor born Jones (26 March 1863 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England-14 April 1946 Dennistoun, Camberley, England), served in the British Royal Navy between 1876-1922, admiral.
