Japanese cruisers Hashidate and Itsukushima visited the Dutch East Indies in 1901

The Dutch Jaarboek van de Koninkli jke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1900-1901 reported that the Japanese cruisers Haschidate (1) and Itsukuschima (2) visited Tandjong Priok, Dutch East Indies between 12-20 April 1901. The Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated 13 April reported the arrival of both French-built ships a day earlier at Batavia (The De Preanger-bode dated 16 April reported Friday afternoon]. The edition dated 16 April reported that the Itsukushima commanding officer J. Nujima and the Hashidate commanding officer N. Miyaoka both coming from Manila, Philippines bound for Singapore. The Dutch newspaper Het vaderland dated 25 January referred to a tiding sent from Shanghai, China to London, England reporting that the Japanese training ship Itsukushima was lost off the Japanese east coast with 95 men including 49 cadets on board.

1. Part of Matsuhima-class protected cruisers preceded by Naniwa-class, building ordered under the 1886 Fiscal Year, launched at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, Japan on 6 August 1888, launched on 24 March 1891, completed on 26 June 1894, stricken on 1 April 1922 and broken up in 1927.

2. Part of Matsuhima-class protected cruisers preceded by Naniwa-class, building ordered undeer 1886 Fiscal Year, laid down by Société Nouvelle des Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée, La Seyne-sur-Mer, France on 7 January 1888, launched on 18 July 1889, completed on 3 September 1891, stricken on 12 March 1926 and broken up in the same year.
