An item reported that American submarines active in the waters of the Dutch East Indies now occupied by the Japanese attacked several Japanese warships: 21 February 2 torpedo hits on a cruiser, 2 March 2 torpedo hits on an aircraft carrier (the J.I.C. commented that this was the first successful attack on a aircraft carrier), 4 March 3 torpedo hits on a large oil tanker which sunk, 4 March one certain one possible torpedo hit on a cruiser, 4 March one torpedo hit on a cruiser and 4 March 2 torpedo hits on a destroyer leader which sunk. The communications with Java however were not reestablished.(1)
Note
1. The Battle of Java 28 February-12 March ended with the surrender at Bandung on 12 March 1942. The ABDA naval squadron commanded by the Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman had not been able to eliminate the Japanese invasion forces and was nearly complete destroyed.
