An item reported that in the week ending 20 August British submarines sunk 7 ships (one after an air attack) and 4 smaller vessels and damaging two more ships although these probably reached a harbour. Between 21-23 August submarines and air attacks destroyed another 4 ships. The J.I.C. commented that the results were exclusive of results against coastal lighters. It was believed that the Axis forces started to lacking sufficient ships for the Mediterranean-Black Sea shipping routes.
