Dutch cargo screw steam ship Bintang 1916-1942

Launched by Maatschappij voor Scheeps- en Werktuigbouw Fijenoord N.V., Rotterdam, Netherlands with yard number 274 for account of the N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij ‘Nederland’, Amsterdam, Netherlands on 12 April 1916, delivered on 19 October 1916 and torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U 160 in the early morning of 21 November 1942 650 miles east of Trinidad, underway from Cape Town, South Africa to the USA. Call sign NHBD since 1934 PDDI. Gross tonnage 6,481 tons, net tonnage 4,027 tons, deadweight 9,124 tons, grain capacity 468,000 cubic feet, bale capacity 428,000 cubic feet and as dimensions 182.02 (registered) x 16.61 (registered) x 8,53 (registered) meters. Fitted out with 1-3,600 ihp 3-cylinder triple expansion steam engine allowing a speed of 12.50 knots. In 1925 replaced by 1-3,600 ahp Sulzer diesel engine allowing a speed of 13 knots.
