The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1910-1911 reported that the French cruiser 1st class Montcalm visited Tandjong Priok between 1-9 March and Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 26-29 April 1911. The Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 25 February 1911 reported thats he was the flagship of the French squadron in the East Asian waters of rear-admiral De la Croix de Castries. (2) She measured 9,500 ton, maximum speed 21 miles, 2-19,4cm guns in armoured turrets fore and aft, 8-16,5cm guns in armoured casemates, 4-10cm guns, 16-47mm/3 pd gun and torpedotubes. She was to take fresh water, victuals and Cardiff coal on board. The edition dated Wednesday 1 March 1911 reported the arrival of the armoured cruiser Montcalm at Tandjong Priok around 10:00 o’clock. She was cruising around the world and came from Australia and intended to leave on next Tuesday. The edition dated 2nd March reported her coming from Fremantle, Australia, commanded by Cheron, with a crew of 27 officers and 665 men, armed with 30 guns and bound for Laboeian and Saigon, French Indochina.
