Several Japanese warships and aircraft sighted in the Shortland Islands region according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 21 August 1942

An item reported that during a reconnaissance of the Faisi-Fauro area Shortland Islands region [Solomon Islands] 2 light cruisers, 2 destroyers, 1 seaplane tender, 2 merchant ships and several float planes and flying boats of the Japanese were observed. Five Allied heavy bombers attacked unsuccessfully this shipping. Near the Buka passage was a Japanese heavy cruiser sighted.
