An item reported the arrival a day earlier of the Tasmanian whaler Maria Orr, homeport Hobart for victuals and sailors. During her cruise of 10½ months was her catch 700 barrels sperm oil and 200 barrel whale oil. She was now bound for New Zealand via the Bass’s Straits for black oil. Her master McArthur stated that he sighted several American whalers off Kangaroo Island victual ling. If there was a good map available of the Gulf and the harbour, Adelaide could expect between 20-30 whalers each seasons for victual ling.
