Austrian cruiser SMS Panther visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies in 1909

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1908-1909 reported that the Austrian cruiser SMS Panther (1) visited Sabang, Dutch East Indies (2) between 30 September-4 October 1909.(3)

Notes

1. Part of Panther class torpedo cruisers, preceded by SMS Lussin and succeeded by SMS Tiger, laid down by Armstrong, Elswick, England on 29 October 1884, launched on 13 June 1885, completed on 31 December 1885 handed over to England as war prize and sold to Italian shipbreakers to be scrapped in 1920. Displacement 1,582 tons, armament 2-12cm/4.7 guns, 4-4.7cm/1.9”quick firing guns, 6-4.7cm/1.9” revolver cannon and 4-35.6cm/14” torpedo tubes.

2. Sabang had an important coal bunkering station visited by Dutch and internation warships and merchant shipping.

3.The Dutch newspaper Scheepvaart dated 4 November 1909 confirmed her arrival on 30 September at Sabang. The Deli courant dated 14 October 1909 reported her arrival of her at Penang, Malaysia a few days earlier. She was described as an armoured nicely built warship with a displacement of 1,530 tons armed with quick firing guns and a crew numbering 237 men. Commanding officer was [Theodor Skerl] Edler von Schmidtheim. The Austrian consul Suhl was offered a diner on board, the etat major visited Thursday evening the 7th his house for a feast and Friday morning was a reception on board visited by the resident consul and harbour master MacIntyre. Von Schmitdheim (1864-1926( ended his career in the rank of rear admiral.
