Italian battleship Littorio 1934-1954

Part of Littorio of Vittorio Veneto-class fast battleships, preceded by planned Francesco Caracciolo-class and realized Andrea Doria-class, building ordered on 10 June 1934, laid down by Ansaldo, Genoa Sestri Ponente, Italy on 28 October 1934, launched on 22 August 1937, commissioned on 6 May 1940, rewarded as war prize to the USA in 1947, decommissioned and stricken on 1 June 1948 and broken up at La Spezia, Italy between 1952-1954.

With a displacement of 41,376 (standard)-45,963 (full load) tons and as dimensions 236.76 x 32.82 x 9.6 metres or 780.1 x 107.8 x 31.6 feet. The propulsion consisted of 4 steam turbines and 8 Yarrow boilers supplying via 4 shafts and 4 screws 128,200 ship allowing a speed of 30 knots and a range of 3,920 nautical miles.20 knots. Crew numbered 1,830-1,950 men. Armament consisted of a 35cm/14” thick main belt, a 16.2cm/6.4”thick deck with the gun turrets protected by 35cm/13.77” and the conning tower by 26cm/10” thick armour. Armament consisted of x3-381.cm/15” guns, 4x3-15.2cm/6” guns, 4-12cm/4.7” cal 40 guns, 20-3.7cm/1.5” guns, 20-2cm/0.79” guns and 2 IMAM Ro. 43 or Reggiane Re.2000 reconnaissance planes for which she carried a catapult on her stern.
