American destroyer USS Gyatt converted into a guided missile destroyer according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 March 1957

An item reported that the American 2,250 ton destroyer USS Gyatt was converted into a guided missile destroyer and now commissioned. The guns and magazines were removed and replaced by a Terrier launcher with magazine, the 5’ and 3” guns forward were kept. Further more was the British roll stabilisation system fitted. It was the only conversion in the small-ship class to be while in the meantime the newbuilding of 8 guided missile destroyers and 7 guided missile frigates was approved.(1)

Laid down by Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Kearny, New Jersey, USA on 7 September 1944, launched on 15 April 1945, commissioned on 2 July 1945, classified as DDG-172 on 1 December 9156, DDG-1 on 23 May1957, DD-712 on 1 October 1962, stricken on 22 October 1969 and sunk as as a target on 11 June 1970.
