Replacement of the in 2014 decommissioned Zr.Ms. Amsterdam. Based on a Damen LSV-design offered to Norway and that of the joint support ship Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman. Department of Defence announced on 9 June 2017 that a new combat support ship was planned, in spring 2018 staff demands completed, on 9 November 2018 announced that she was to be named Den Helder, contract signed on 19 February 2020, first steel cut on 2 December 2020, laid down on 2 June 2021, on 11 April 2022 parts 2 and 3 launched to be assembled in the dry dock with parts 1 and 4, in May 2023 towed to the quay with trials planned in early 2024 and to be commissioned in 2025. Built by Damen Galatz Shipyard, Romania. Maxium displacement 22,585 tons and as dimension 179.3 x 26.4 x 8.3 metres. Speed minimum 18 knots. Crew numbers 76 men with accommodation for 156 men. Armament Leonardo 76/62 Sovraponte gun and Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) rocket system both after maintenance to be mounted, 2-12.7mm/0.50” automatic controlled Leonardo Lionfish Top machineguns and 6-7.62mm MAG machineguns.
