American naval attaché at Moscow, Russia reported in December 1941 referring to a British observer with the Russian Black Sea Fleet that the morale of the Russian defenders of Sevastopol was very high and he expected that the city was hold.

1. Siege of Sevastopol by German forces between 30 October 1941-29 June 1942 when Sevastopol fell. On 4 July 1942 was Cherson captured and the Crimea controlled by the Germans.
