Several 1930s editions of the Brassey’s Naval Annual published a sketch of the Dutch light cruiser Celebes then under construction at Rotterdam, Netherlands. The following details were supplied: tonnage 5,900 tons, an extreme length of 560 feet, 32 knots speed and an armament of 3x2-5.9”, 4-4.2” anti aicraft guns, 4 machine guns and for launchinhg the 2 seaplanes a catapult. There was a light cruiser between 1933-1936 under construction by Wilton-Fijenoord, Schiedam but this was the Hr.Ms. De Ruyter, flagship of rear admiral Karel Doorman in the disastrous sea battle in the Java Sea. The Celebes design was in fact the De Ruyter but the final design of the latter was improved including adding a 7th gun. Her technical characteristics were 6,545 (standard)-7,669 (full load) tons and as dimensions 170.9 x 15.7 x 5.1 metres or 560.8 x 51.6 x 16.9 feet. Armament 3x1&1x1-15cm/5.9” guns, 5x2-4cm/1.57” Bofors anti aircraft guns and 8x12.7mm/0.50” Browning machine guns. The De Ruyter was preceded by the Java-class light cruisers of which the Java and Sumatra were completed, the third unit was named Celebes of 6,670-8,078 (full loaded) tons was laid down by Wilton-Fijenoord on 14 June 1917but 1919 cancelled and broken up.
