Danish merchant sailors witnesses Italians attacking British cruiser HMS York in 1941

American naval attaché at Rome, Italy reported in July 1941 that Danish merchant sailors going back home from Crete witnesses the sinking of the British cruiser HMS York by an one-man torpedo boat in May.(1)

1. York-class heavy cruiser, preceded by County-class, building ordered on 21 October 1926, laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow on 16 May 1927, launched on 17 July 1928, commissioned on 1 May 1930, disabled at Suday Bay, Crete by Italian explosive motorboats on 26 March 1941, heavily damaged in a German air attack on 18 May, guns blown up on 22 May 1941 and breaking up started on 3 March 1952.
