After the Strike cruiser (CSGN) debacle was a new programme developed of four guided missile cruisers to be built under the planned Fiscal Years 1979, respectively 1981, 1983 and 1985 to be commissioned in 1984 respectively 1986, 1987 and 1989. The major difference with the design of the Virginia-class (CGN 42-45, Virginia, Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas) was that she was able to be mounted with teh Aegis system and to be fitted out with the newest electronic, fire control and weapon systems. The CGN 42 was originally planned as part of the Viriginia-class but cancelled. All ships were probably to be built by Newport News SB&Do. under a contract awarded in November 1977. In January 1979 was the program cancelled. Reason “overtaken by events”.
Full load displacement 12,000 tons and as dimensions 172.2 (waterline) x 19.2 x 7.3 metres or 560 x 63 x 24 feet. Armament of probably 2 helicopters, 2x2-Tartar D/ASROC Mk26 launchers for Standard MR surface-to-air missiles, 2x1-12.7cm/5” 54 calibre, 2x1-4cm saluting guns,2-2cm Mk15 CIWS and 2x3 Mk32 torpedo tubes for Mk36 torpedoes. Nuclear propulsion with 2 pressurised-water cooled D2W reactors, 2 geared turbines, 2 shafts and a minimum speed of 30 knots. Crew was to number 634 men including 52 officers.
