American Naval Attaché at London, England reported on 19 April 1939 No. 378 that the Admiralty announced on 16 April 1939 that the contract for the Fleet Air Arm Supply and Repair Ship HMS Unicorn (1) would be placed by Messrs. Harland&Wolff Ltd., Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was a new type of ship with her tonnage and design kept secret. The shipyard was also to built the around 10,000 tons submarine depot ship HMS Adamant.(2)

Maintenance aircraft carrier, ordered on 14 April 1939, laid down with yard number 1031 on 26 June 1939, launched on 20 November 1941, completed on 12 March 1943 and finally sold to be broken up on 15 June 1959. Displacement 16,770 (standard)-20,660 (deep load) tons and as dimensions 195.1 x 27.51 x 7.0 or 640 x 90.3 x 23 feet.
2. Building ordered on 1 March 1939, laid down with yard number 1023 on 18 May 1939, launched on 30 November 1940, completed on 28 Feburary 1942 and broken up in September 1970.
