Japanese cargo ship Sumanoura Maru 1939-1942
Call sign JWVN. Laid down by Mitsubishi Kukyogo Zosensho K.K., Yokohama, Japan on 20 May 1939, launched on 26 December 1939, completed on 31 May 1940, chartered by the navy on 20 November 1940, requisitioned by the navy on 28 November 1940, converted for military purposes between 16 December 1940-14 January 1941 and torpedoed and sunk as troop transport by the American submarine USS Pope on 24 January 1942 at Balikpapan, Dutch East Indies. Gross tonnage 3,519 tons, net tonnage 2,049 tonsand as dimensions 343.9 x 48.2 x 27.9 x 8 (light)-22 (loaded) feet. Reciprocating propulsion, single screw, 294 nhp, coal bunker capacity 385 tons, range 5,000 nautical miles/12 knots and speed 12 (normal cruising)-14 (maximum) knots.
