Japanese cruiser claimed to be sunk off Christmas Island according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 4 April 1942

An item reported that Allied submarines sunk a Japanese Natori-class cruisers and damaged a second cruiser during the Christmas Island invasion. The J.I.C. commented that the Japanese flagship was hit by one torpedo. The flagship of rear admiral Shōji Nishimura was the Naka part of the Sendai-class preceded by Nagara-class succeeded by Agano-class, the Naka was 1 April heavily damaged by one torpedo of the American submarine USS Seawolf SS-197 and towed to the Bantam Bay, Java, Dutch East Indies by the Natori.
