Japanese cargo ship (ex-Aphrodite 1897-1905, Yetorofu 1905-1934) Hokusei Maru 1934-1945

Call sign JBJA. Launched by Russell&Co., Kingston Yard, Port Glasgow, Scotland with yard number 409 on 8 November 1897, completed in January 1898, captured by the Japanese auxiliary cruiser Nippon Maru off the Etofuru Strait underway from Cardiff to Vladivostok loaded with coal, on 4 March 1905, condemned in a prize court and sunk after striking a mine off Fukushima on 6 March 1945. Gross tonnage 3,945 tons, under deck 3,648 tons, net tonage 2,849 tons, deadweight 6,250 tons and as dimensions 344.9 x 49.8 x 17.8 x 10.5 (light)-22.7 (loaded) feet. Reciprocating propulsion, 46 nhp horsepower, single screw, coal bunker capacity 799 tons, range 6,200 miles/8.5 knots and speed 8.5 (normal cruising)-9.5 (maximum) knots.
