Ordered under the Fiscal Year 1931 as part of the Maru-1 Supplementary Naval Expansion Budget, laid down by Harima Shipyards, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan on 27 September 1934, launched on 24 November 1935, commissioned on 30 September 1936, torpedoed by the American submarine USS S-42 off New Ireland, still floating under tow by the destroyer Mochizuku capsized she in the St. George’s Channel, Bismarck Sea on the position 05°06’ South 153°48’ East on 12 May 1942 and stricken on 25 May 1942.
