Enemy submarines active in the Atlantic theatre according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 31 January 1942

An item reported that in the past 36 hours enemy submarines were active off the Atlantic coastline between Nantucket and Jacksonville, USA. There were 18 sight contracts with actually one attack when the ship was hit and her crew abandoning. However it was possible that there were just 6 submarines present.
