An item referred to Spenavo, London reported the estimated strength of the Japanese fleet and as far as known how the ships were divided over the several forces: 9 battleships, 10 aircraft carriers, 17 heavy cruisers, 21 light cruisers, 101 destroyers, 86 submarines and 1 seaplane tender. According to the ONI calculations there should be 11 battleships, 10 aircraft carriers, 18 heavy cruisers, 20 light cruisers, 130 destroyers, submarines 76 and 1 seaplane tender.
