Japanese activities in the Gilbert Islands according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 12 December 1941

An item reported the sighting of a Japanese submarine east of Abaing, Gilbert Islands going to the south. Japanese troops landed on Tarawa [Kiribati] disembarked by a light cruiser and a destroyer but withdrew after dark.
