Sister ships Hakkai Maru and Myoko Maru. Call sign JYBM. Laid down by Tama Shipbuilding Co. Ld., Tama, Japan on 21 May 1938, launched on 12 November 1938, completed on 21 February 1939, requisitioned by the navy on 26 March 1941, became an auxiliary general transport, converted into as repair ship between 12 August-1 September 1942, sunk in an Allied air attack off Rabaul on 17 January 1944 and stricken on 10 March 1944. Gross tonnage 5,114 tons, under deck 4,409 tons, netto tonnage 2,966 tons and as dimensions 10 (light)-24.6 (loaded) feet. Diesel propulsion, single screw, horsepower 855 nhp,oil bunker capacity 1,298 tons, range nautical 25,000 miles/14 knots and speed 14 (normal cruising)-16.5 (maximum) knots. Capable of mounting 12.7cm/5”-15.,24cm/6” guns.
