Large Japanese naval force believed to be in the mid Pacific according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 12 December 1941

An item reported that since the attack on Pearl Harbor [7 December 1941] Japanese warships were regrouped into task forces and extensively shifted. It was believed that in the mid Pacific a force was present numbering 6 aircraft carriers, 2 battleships, 2 heavy and 5 light cruisers , 24 destroyers, 24 submarines and 2 submarine tenders.(1)
