Large numbers of Japanese warships sighted in the Coral Sea according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee Daily summary dated 11 May 1942

An item reported that on 9 May huge numbers of Japanese ships were see in the Coral Sea.(1) A strong force was seen around 350 miles east by north of Townsville, Australia and which consisted of a battleship, 2 aircraft carriers escorted by 5 cruisers and 4 destroyers. Near New Guinea and the Solomon Islands were more Japanese warships seen loosing contact with their other ships.
