Russian cargo ship (ex-Helder 1918-1919, Drechtstroom 1919-1933) Vetluga 1933-1960

Call sign UOYL. Homeport Leningrad. Built by A. Vuijk&Zonen, Capelle a/d IJssel, Netherlands in 1918, delivered in November 1918 to owner/manager Owner/manager N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Hoorn, Amsterdam, Netherlands, renamed Drechtstroom owner/manager N.V. Hollandsche Stoomboot on 20 November 1918 or renamed March 1919?, renamed Vetluga manager Baltiyskaya Glavnaya Kontora (Baltic Shipping Company), owner A/O 'Sovtorgflot' both Leningrad on 15 January 1933, manager Baltiyskoe Gosudarstvennoe Morskoe Parohodstvo (Baltic Shipping Company), Leningrad on 5 January 1938, manager Sakhalinskoe Morskoe Parokhodstvo (Sakhalin Shipping Company), Kholmsk on 23 March 1946 and stricken from Lloyds Register in 1960, fate unknown. The Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad dated 26 February 1918 reported in an item dated Amsterdan 23 February that she was laid down for the Hollandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij but the building contract was cancelled while the date of delivery was unknown. The newspaper Scheepvaart dated 7 January 1918 claimed she was sold; the Algemeen Handelsblad dated 4 January confirmed this news, owner became Stoomvaart Maatschappij Hoorn, board J.F. van Hengel, Amsterdam. The Het nieuws van den dag dated 9 March 1919 reported that the Helder was renamed Drechtstroom. Gross tonnage 1,717 tons, under deck 1,358 tons, net tonnage 940 tons, grain capacity 147,000 cubic feet, bale capacity 138,000 cubic feet and as dimensions 270.7 x 41.7 x 16.7 x 19 (loaded) feet. Normal cruising speed 9 knots. Not easily distinguishable from similar Japanese ships.
