An item referred to the US Consul Dakar reporting that the armed forces at Dakar, Senegal were prepared for immediate action.(1) Radio Dakar asked for protective measures after the ‘brutal’ sinking of a French merchant ship by a British submarine.(2)

1. The fast battleship Richelieu was lying with engine problems at Dakar. Part of Richelieu-class response on the Italian Littorio-class, preceded by Dunkerque class succeeded by planned Alsace-class, laid down by Arsenal de Brest on 22 October 1935, launched on 17 January 1939, commissioned on 1 April 1940, decommissioned in 1967 and stricken and broken up in 1968.
2. Between 23-25 September 1940 the Allies tried without success to conquer Dakar (Operation Menace)
