USS naval officer and historian (27 September 1840 West Point, USA-1 December 1914 Quogue, USA) ended his career in the rank of rear admiral. Strategist, well known for his books The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660–1783 (1890) and The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793–1812 (1892).
