Part of Brooklyn-class Brooklyn-subclass preceded by Omaha-class succeeded by Atlanta-class. Penannt CL-46. Ordered on 13 February 1929, contract awarded on 22 August 1934, laid down by New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, USA on 15 April 1935, launched on 12 March 1938, commissioned on 3 October 1938, decommissioned on 3 July 1946, stricken on 27 January 1951, sold to Argentina on 9 April 1951, commissioned as ARA 17 de Octubre on 17 October 1951, renamed ARA General Belgrano in 1956 and torpedoed and sunk during the Falklands War by the British submarine HMS Conqueror on 2 May 1982.
