In his letter dated Istanbul, 20 January 1940 No. 650 g1. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported that the Turkish merchant steamship Sadan sailed for enemy account to harbours in the Mediterranean. The Turkish government forbade passing via Gibraltar.
