American destroyer USS Roper made contact with submarine off Portsmouth, USA according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 1 January 1942

An item reported that the USS Roper had a definitive sound contact with a submarine off the Isles of Shoals off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. Supported by aircraft was she now searching.(1)

1. DD-147. Part of Wickes-class preceded by Caldwell-class succeeded by Clemson-class. Laid down by William Cramp&Sons, Philadelphia, USA with yard number 462 on 19 March 1918, launched on 17 August 1918, commissioned on 15 February 1919, reclassifed as transport destroyer APD-20 on 20 October 943,, decommisioned on 15 September 1945, stricken on 11 October 1945, sold to be broken up on 31 March 1946 and broken up in December 1946.
