An item referred to the Japanese Shipping and Trade News dated December 1955 which reported that the Chinese governemt reorganized the fleet of 294,000 river junks on voluntary basis into mutal aid and co-operative organisations and that 94%of the boatmen in the Szechwan area signed up. Also elsewhere like Kinagsi, Anhwei, Hunan, Kwangtung, Kiangsu, Santung and Kansu boatmen signed up. The transport co-operatives were to able to pool in this manner manpower, techniques and finances. The governemt would control the freight transport charges and the boatman would get dividends on the value of their junks and paid for their labour. Junks with a total cargo capacity of more as 3.000.0000 tons still played a very important role (85%) in the river transport.
