An item reported that the Royal Thai Navy suffered badly after the June 1951 coup (2)but was building itself up again. There were still good younger officers and men available who needed support and couragement for further improvement. However it would take a long period to become an efficient force. The navy as no more than a coastal defence force suited to the needs of Thailand but compared with Western effficieny standards to be called low. At the moment it consisted of 3 frigates, 1 corvette, 6 submarine chasers, 7 patrol boats,1 ocean and 3 coastal minesweepers, 1 minelayer, 1 L.S.T., 2 L.S.M.’s, 2 L.S.I.L.’s, 6 L.S.U.’s and 2 L.C.T.’s.(2) However of these ships just 2 frigates, 1 minesweeper and 5 submarine chasers meet our minimum operational standards.
Notes
1. The so-called Manhattan Rebellion, a failed coup led by naval officers on 29-30 June 1951 against the military government of Prime Minister Plaek Pibungsongkram resulting in a reduced role and influence of the navy.
2. The in the 1930s in Japan built Matchanu-class submarines still exist although the Submarine Group was dissolved on 16 July 1951 and the submarines decommissioned on 30 November 1951.
