Type XXI-class ocean going diesel-electric submarines preceded by the VII-, IX- and XVIII-classes of which the latter was cancelled and to be succeeded by the not completed XXVI-class. The XXI-class was built between 1943-1945 at the shipyards of Blohm+Voss, AG Weser and Schichau-Werke. Designed as the first real submarine serving primarily under water. At the Maritime Museum, Bremerhaven is the last floating example preserved namely the U-2540.
