An item reported that on 29 July the American heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (1) was torpedoed and sunk with heavy heavy losses in the Philippines Sea.(2) She recently transported material for the atomic bomb offensive (2) from San Francisco to Guam.

1. Part of Portland-class, preceded by Northampton-class succeeded by New Orleans-class. Ordered on 13 February 1929, contract awarded on 15 August 1929, laid dwon by the NewYork Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey on 31 March 1930, launched on 7 November 1931, commissioned on 15 November 1932 and torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58 on 30 July 1945.
2. Laid down by Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, Japan on 26 December 1942, launched on 9 October 1943, completed on 7 September 1944, surrendered on 2 September 1945 and scuttled on 1 April 1946. B3 type cruiser submarine.
3. She transported materials including uranium for the atomic bomb Little Boy to Tinian Island, Northern Mariana Islands. Littly Boy was used for bombing Hiroshima, Japan on 6 August 1945.
