An item reported that on 8 August the American battleship USS New Jersey (1) and the cruiser Biloxi (2) continued with shelling Wake Island.(3)

1. BB-62. Part of Iowa-class preceded by South Dakota-class to be succeeded by the not realized Montana-class. Ordered on 1 July 1939, laid down by Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 16 September 1940, launched on 7 December 1942, commissioned on 23 May 1943, last time decommissioned on 8 February 1991, stricken on 4 January 1991 and nowadays museum ship.
1. CL-80. Part of Cleveland-class light cruisers preceded by Atlanta-class succeeded by Fargo-class. Laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding&Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 9 July 1941, launched on 23 February 1943, commissioned on 31 August 1943, decommissioned on 31 August 1943, stricken on 1 December 1961 and sold to be broken up on 5 March 1962.
2. Annexed in 1899 by the USA which built between 1940-1941 an important air force and naval base captured by the Japanese in December 1941.
