A letter of the German naval attache in Japan dated Tokyo, Japan 22 July 1937 referred to a tiding of the Japanese headquarters dealing with the achievements of the Japanese forces in the Second Sino-Japanese War (18 September 1931)-7 July 1937-2 September 1945.
Totally were 43 ships of the Chinese navy with a total tonnage of around 43,000 ton which was 60% of the fleet )around 73,620 ton) destroyed. Japanese navy aircraft destroyed 1,075 Chinese aircraft. The Japanese losses were 1,100 men killed, 89 aircraft and some small vessels chartered by the navy. Captured were the harbours of Weihaiwei, Tsingtao, Lien Yung Chiang and Chifu and the islands Lingshan, Chalientau, Taikungtau and Hsiau-kungtau near Tsingtao and Cheniushantan off Lien Yun Chiang, in mid-China the Mash islands and some islands in the Hangtschau Bought, in South China the islands Matsushantau near Foochow-Amoy, Hsiao-Quemoytau near Amoy-Quemoytau and near Swatau Namaotau, Tungsha Islands and a large number of smaller islands near Footsohou.
The destroyed ships were:
Cruisers sunk on the Yangtze Hai-Chi, Hai-Shen, Hai-Yung, Hai-Chow, Ying-Jui, Tung-Chi, Ping-Hai and Ning-Hai (the latter salvaged by the Japanese) and at Kanton the Chao-Ho.
Auxiliary cruiser Chen-hai sunk at Tsingtau.
Gunboats sunk on the Yangtze the I-Shien, Wei-Sheng, Yung Chieng,Yiung Hsianf and Hsien-Ning. At Tsingtau the Kinag-Li and Chu-Yu, at Foochow the Chu-Tai and at Kanton the Hai-Hu, Kinag-Ta and Hai-Chiang.
Auxiliary gunboat Wu-Fengsunk at Kanton.
River gunboat Chien-Ju sunk at Kanton.
Small gunboats Wei-Ning considerable damaged on the Yangtze, sunk on the Yangtze the Kian-Ning, Chuan Ning and Chang Ning and at Foochow sunk the Hsiao-Ning, Wu-Ning an Chen-Ning, at Weihaiwe sunk the Hai-Ou (salvaged by the Japanese), sunk at Tsingtau the Hai-Hao, Hai-Yen, Hai-Ching, Hai-Peng and Hai-Chun.
Destroyers Kien-Kang sunk on the Yangtze and the Tung-An at Tsingtau.
Torpedo boat Hu-E sunk on the Yangtze.
Special ships Ting-Hai, Chiao-Jih? and Ching-Tien sunk on the Yangtze and the Fu-An at Kanotn.
Ships which were bombed by Japanese navy aircraft but not sunk were the gunboats Chu-Kuan, Min-Sheng, Min-Cuan, I-Ning and Sui-Ming and the torpedo boats Hu-Peng and Hu-Shun.
