USA handing over submarine and minesweepers to Japan according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 March 1955

An item reported that except for the 1,700 ton submarine (1)to be handed in October by the USA over to Japan and to be used for training purposes also in March seven 300 ton minesweepers (2) were to be handed over.

Notes

1. The Kuroshio, ex-Gato-class submarine USS Mingo, taken over in August 1955. Built between 21 March 1942 and 12 Feburary 1943.

2. The Etajima-class coastal minesweepers Etajima (ex-USS Firecrest), Nuwajima (ex-USS Heron), Ogishima (ex-USS Pelican), Ujishima (ex-USS Condor), Yakushima (ex-USS Sprey), Yugejima (ex-USS Swallow) and Yurushima (ex-USS Chatterer).
