Dutch passsenger-cargo ship ss Tajandoen torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-47 on 7 December 1939

An item reported that the Dutch 8,159 tons merchant ship ss Tajandoen was torpedoed and sunk 45 miles south of the Lizard. Not part of a convoy, in ballast. Two lifeboats with 62 survivors were picked up, 6 men were missing.(1)

1. Launched by the N.V. Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw-Maatschappij, Amsterdam, Netherlands with yard number 207 on 2 May 1931, delivered to the N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederlands, Amsterdam in September 1931, underway from Amsterdam and Antwerp, Belgium to Batavia, Dutch East Indies early morning 7 December torpedoed about 35 miles north of Ouessant by German submarine U-47. The survivors were rescued by the Belgian ss Louis Sheid and the Italian ss Giorgio Ohlsen.
