Part of Admiral Hipper-class preceded by Deutschland-class succeeded by planned P-class. Five planned of which 3 three were completed and 2 cancelled. Laid down by Deutsche Werke, Kiel, Germany with yard number 246 on 15 August 1935, launched on 8 June 1937, commissioned on, 20 September 1939 and sunk in the Battle of the Drøbak Sound, Norway on 9 April 1940.
