Part of Kaidai-class submarine KD3A Type preceded by I-52. Based on the Kaiday Type II I-52 and the former German submarine SMS U-125 built in 1918. Laid down by Kure Naval Arsenal, Kure, Japan on 1 April 1924, renamed I-53 on 1 November 1924, completed and commissioned on 30 March 1927, renamed I-153 on 20 May 1942, hulked on 31 January 1944, surrendered to the Allied forces in 1945, stricken on 30 November 1945 and scuttled on 8 May 1946 or broken up in 1948.
