British merchant ship Carthage chartered for the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882

Between July-September 1882 was the United Kingdom in war with Egyptian and Sudanese troops ending in the British occupation of Egypt. The British government chartered between July-August a lot of merchant steamships for transporting troops, stores etc. from the United Kingdom to Egypt including the Carthage of the Peninsular and Oriental Company. Gross tonnage 5,100 tons. Served as hospital ship of the expedition with her roomy decks including a 300 feet long promenade. Recently acquired by her owner.(1)

1. According to Lloyds Register 1882 net tonnage 2,588 tons, gross tonnage 5,013 tons and under deck 4,733 tons and as dimensions 430.1 x 44.4 x 33.5, built by Carid&Co., Greenock in August 1881.
