German large ocean-going submarine IXD2 in 1945

Part of the Type IX-submarine subclass Type IXD2 preceded by Type I succeeded by Type XXI. Of the Type IXD were three versions namely the IXD1, IXD2 and the IXD/42. Between 1937 and 1945 were totally 194 Type XI-submarines completed of the 200 under construction and the 290 planned of which 90 were cancelled. On 15 August 1940 were the first of the Type IXD2 ordered. Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen, Germany built 28 of this Type which were taken into service between 1942-1944. The building of another 22 boats was cancelled except for the two already under construction.The U-883 was completed and commissioned on 17 May 1944, the U-884 heavily damaged during an American air attack on 30 March 1944 was however never commissioned.
