Part of Project 945 Barrakuda called by the NATO Sierra-I preceded by the Alfa- and Victor-classes and succeeded by Akula-class and which was an upgraded version of the Project 945 Barrakuda (NATO Siera I).

Laid down on 20 July 1979, launched on 29 July 1983, commissioned on 29 September 1994, laid up in reserve in 1977, withdrawn on 30 May 19998, announced in March 2015 that the repairs were suspended.
