Illustrated London News dated 16 June 1877
Ordered in 1871 by admiral David D. Porter (1) who was also responsible for her design although the details were drawn by Isaiah Hanscom (2), Chief of the Bureau of Construction. Laid down by New York Navy Yard in 1873, launched on 13 November 1873, commissioned in 1874, decommissioned in 1885, stricken in 1897 and sold to be broken up on 23 February 1898. Fitted out with a ram bow with a length of 25 foot.

1. David Dixon Porter (8 June 1813 Chester, Pennsylvania, USA-13 February 1891 Arlington, Virginia, USA), served in the Mexican Navy between 1825-1829 and in the US Navy between 1829-1891 ending his career in the rank of admiral.
2. Isaiah Hanscom 1815 Eliott, Maine, USA-5 March 1880 Washington, USA), naval constructor since 14 March 1856, chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repair between January 1871-April 1877 and on the Retired List 29 June 1877. Commodore.
