Dupuy de Lôme as Peruvian Commandant Aguirre around 1912©Warshipsresearch.blogspot.com
Part of Amiral Charner-clas preceded by Dupuy de Lôme succeeded by Pothua. Laid down by Arsenal de Rochefort in September 1890, launched on 2 August 1894, commissioned on 15 December 1896, part of the reserve since 1919, plans to convert her into an accomodation ship or as a merchant ship proved to be impractical, stricken on 21 June 1920 and sold to be broken up on 21 June 1921. To act as commerce raiders in times of war according to the Jeune École naval strategy. The concept consisted on the one hand of small but heavily armed vessels battling enemy battleships and on the other hand destroying the enemy trade/merchant shipping using commerce raiders. The prominent plough-shaped ram bow causing a very ship forward was a relic from the past. This weapon became in the second half of the 19th Century again popular with even special built ships like the American harbor-defense ram USS Katahdin or the British torpedo ram HMS Polyphemus.
