Italian shipping between Italy and Greece according to the Kriegsnachrichten of the Chef des Admiralstabes der Marine dated Berlin 21 August 1917

An item referred to a tiding of an agent dated 5 August reporting that ships larger than 4,000 ton rounded from Saloniki, Greece from the south, smaller ships used the Corinth Canal and usually visited Patras and passing later between Santa Maura and Ithaka before going to Gallipoli or Cotrone. The ships bound for Naples departed in tthe first nightly hours for Cotrone staying close to the coast arriving at Messina before daylight continuing their voyage the next night. Als most ammunion transports of the Italian Saloniki force choose for the same route depending on their size via Cape Matapan or the Corinth Canal. More recent seems a larger part of the ammunion to be transpported nu railway towards Cotrone where a large ammunitiondepot was established with as reason to save ships cargo space. The troop transports of the Orient force travelled via Gallipoli towards Santi Quarantana or Saloniki. Since the occupation of Greece became Patros more important as intermediate stop for the ships using the Corinth Canal and anti submarine warfare/ A coal depot and a seaplane base was there established. On 25 July were town and harbour still undefended.
